L’impianto originale del castello risale al XIII secolo. In seguito subì numerose distruzioni e venne riedificato prima nel corso del 1300 dai conti Sanvitale e poi verso la metà del 1400, quando Pier Maria Rossi gli conferì l’aspetto attuale. Della costruzione spiccano il possente mastio quadrilatero e il perimetro delle mura con le quattro torri circolari agli estremi. Fu per secoli il fulcro amministrativo della giurisdizione dei conti Sanvitale e al proprio interno trovavano sede il tribunale, le carceri, l’abitazione del podestà e i reparti della milizia. Dal dicembre 2005, dopo adeguato restauro ed accurato allestimento, il maniero è diventato il “Castello della Musica”, coniugando storia, arte e cultura.
The original layout of the castle dates back to the XIII century. After being destroyed several times, it was rebuilt first in the XIV century by the counts of Sanvitale and then, towards the middle of the XV century, when Pier Maria Rossi gave it its present appearance. Outstanding elements of the building are the mighty square keep and the perimeter of the walls, with four round towers at the ends.
For centuries it was the administrative centre of the jurisdiction of the counts of Sanvitale and housed the law court, the prisons, the residence of the Podestà and the militia.
In December 2005, after having been adequately restored and accurately arranged, the manor became the "Castle of Music", bringing together history, art and culture.
