The building still has its original layout dating back to the 8th century, when Liutprand, King of the Longobards, founded the Benedictine abbey around which Berceto grew up, an important station on the Via Francigena. The cathedral was rebuilt between the 12th and the 13th century and new works were undertaken during the 16th century and in 1845; however, the 19th century restructuring of the façade did not compromise the 12th century portal, with its lunette and carved architrave. The grandiose interior, composed of a nave and two aisles in Ligurian-Tuscan style, dates back to the 15th-16th century and contains fine art works: particularly worthy of notice is the high altar, composed of a stone slab with a motif of peacocks on either side of a cross, dating back to the Longobard foundation of the monastery; the tomb of Saint Brocardus, of 1355, the marble tabernacle of 1542 and a rich wooden altarpiece containing the Madonna del Suffragio by Francesco della Nave (1671).
L'edificio conserva l'originario impianto risalente all’VIII secolo, quando Liutprando, re dei Longobardi, fondò l'abbazia benedettina che dette origine a Berceto, importante postazione sulla via Francigena. Tra il XII e il XIII secolo il duomo fu ricostruito e nuovi cantieri vennero aperti nel corso del Cinquecento e nel 1845; il rifacimento ottocentesco della facciata non compromise tuttavia il portale del XII secolo, con lunetta e architrave scolpito. Il grandioso interno diviso in tre navate, di sapore ligure-toscano, va ascritto al '400-'500 e conserva pregevoli opere d'arte: da segnalare l'altare maggiore costituito da una formella con il motivo dei pavoni ai lati della croce, risalente alla fondazione longobarda del monastero; il sepolcro di San Broccardo, del 1355, il tabernacolo in marmo del 1542 e una ricca ancona lignea contenente la Madonna del suffragio di Francesco della Nave (1671).
