The Church of San Giorgio in Poggiale was built between 1589 and 1663. Along with the oratory by the same name, it was designed by the Bolognese architect Tommaso Martelli. The church was run by the Servite Order until 1798. After the Napoleonic suppressions, it was re-opened for worship and turned over to the Conventual Franciscans. In the 19th century, after many ordeals, it remained closed for a lengthy period, until the Jesuits established themselves there in 1882. After sustaining damage during World War II, it was closed to worship services and partly demolished. In the mid 1970s, it was purchased by the Cassa di Risparmio di Bologna, which used the building to house its art collection. Subsequently, in 1992, the former church also became an exhibition space. In 2007, a second and more extensive architectural and artistic restoration effort began in order to convert the building into the Art and History Library that was inaugurated in 2009.
Edificata tra il 1589 e il 1633 su progetto dell’architetto bolognese Tommaso Martelli, la chiesa di San Giorgio in Poggiale è stata ideata assieme all’omonimo oratorio. Tenuta dai Padri Serviti fino al 1798, riaprì al culto dopo la soppressione napoleonica e fu ceduta ai Minori Conventuali. Nell’Ottocento, a seguito di diverse traversie, ebbe un lungo periodo di chiusura fino a che, nel 1882, vi si stabilirono i Padri Gesuiti.
Danneggiata durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, fu chiusa al culto e parzialmente demolita. A metà degli anni Settanta è stata acquistata dalla Cassa di Risparmio di Bologna che ha destinato l’edificio per la conservazione delle proprie collezioni d’ arte. Successivamente, nel 1992, l’ex edificio religioso è diventato anche centro espositivo. Nel 2007 è iniziato un secondo e più rilevante restauro, architettonico e artistico, per adibire l’intero edificio a Biblioteca d’Arte e di Storia, che ha inaugurato nel 2009.
