Castello Estense - Ferrara

dc:description
Inaugurated in 1998, the museum itinerary comprises the dungeons, the Gothic rooms on the ground floor, the former kitchens, the Lion’s Tower, the Mirror Suite, and allows fifteen rooms of the Castle to be visited, following a route that starts off from the basement of the Lion’s Tower, with the Prisons, connects to the ground floor and then leads to the upper floor. The route thus follows all the rooms where the Dukes once lived, and where it is still possible to admire the characteristic marble and fresco decorations. Between 2001 and 2003 the rooms of the most important historic, artistic and architectural interest were linked in a philological reconstruction with a strong instructive impact, planned by the architect Gae Aulenti. The visit focuses on four different themes related to the Castle: the building as an image of power, the dynasty, the history of the town of Ferrara and lastly the domains of the House of Este. Since 2006 the Castle has also been the official home of the Hermitage Italia project, the result of an agreement between the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and the Province of Ferrara. Its aim is to catalogue the Italian works in the Russian museum, with particular attention to those linked with the House of Este.  The visitors’ tour passes through the Gothic Rooms, the Ducal Kitchens, the Sala del Cordolo or String Course Room adjoining the original tower of which it incorporates part of the structure, and Don Giulio’s Prison. On the upper floor is the Dawn Chamber, in the Lion’s Tower, which, with the Saletta dei Giochi (Small Chamber of Games) and the Sala dei Giochi (Hall of Games), is part of the private and official apartments created by the Dukes from the second half of the 15th century onward. The decorations in the rooms were entrusted to the Filippi family (the father Camillo and his sons Cesare and Sebastiano), aided by Leonardo da Brescia and Ludovico Settevecchi: all the decorations can be dated back to the third from last decade of the 16th century. We must also mention the “Alabaster Studies” which were intended to house the duke’s collections which included paintings by Titian, Dosso Dossi and Garofalo, set out in an iconographic arrangement centred on the theme of bacchanals and alternating with sculptures by Antonio Lombardo.
