Aperta nel 1984, su iniziativa del Comune d'intesa con l'Istituto regionale per i Beni Culturali, ha sede all'interno dell'antico complesso monastico di San Biagio, accanto ad alcune altre strutture culturali cittadine.La sua istituzione risale al 1883, ad opera di Adriano Loli Piccolomini, che in alcune sale della Biblioteca Malatestiana riunì l'intero patrimonio civico formatosi a seguito delle soppressioni napoleoniche degli edifici di culto cesenatie, successivamente, grazie ad alcuni depositi e donazioni da parte di collezionisti privati e della stessa Congregazione di Carità. Verso la metà degli anni Venti, necessità di nuovi spazi per i depositi librari della Maltestiana determinarono lo smembramento di una parte della raccolta. Numerose opere d'arte vennero ospitate all'interno del Palazzo Comunale e solo con i dipinti di maggior pregio, nell'immediato dopoguerra, si costituì una piccola quadreria in una saletta della stessa biblioteca. Nella attuale sede, la pinacoteca propone parte considerevole di un patrimonio consistente in oltre trecento esemplari pittorici dal Quattrocento al secolo scorso. E' divisa sostanzialmente in due sezioni: l'antica e la moderna-contemporanea, costituita in tempi più recenti. Si va da una serie di affreschi frammentari di scuola romagnola del XV secolo, provenienti da vari luoghi sacri della città e dallo stesso convento di San Biagio, ad alcune tavole quattro-cinquecentesche (fra le altre, Madonna col Bambino e Santi, dell'argentano Antonio Aleotti, 1510; il cosidetto Cristo di Casa Lancetti, del cesenate Scipione Sacco, 1545; Ritratto di Filasio Roverella, attribuito a Baldassarre Carrari). Per il Sei-Settecento si ricordano alcune Madonne di Giovan Battista Salvi detto il Sassoferrato, opere di Cignani, Todeschini, Batoni, Piazzetta, oltre alle pitture di alcuni tra i maggiori artisti locali come il Serra, il Razzani, il Milani. Va osservato che due tra le più prestigiose opere della Pinacoteca (La Presentazione al Tempio di Francesco Francia e S. Francesco che riceve le Stimmate del Guercino) sono attualmente visibili negli edifici di culto di provenienza, l'uno in un altare laterale della Basilica della Madonna del Monte, l'altro nella chiesetta dei Cappuccini. La sezione riservata all'Ottocento e al Novecento, espone opere per lo più d'interesse locale ed un'importante raccolta grafica di Gino Barbieri. Nella parte dedicata all'arte contemporanea si propongono alcuni esemplari della Collezione Morellini, comprendente tra l'altro opere di Cagli, Guttuso, Fazzini, Mazzacurati, Mirko, Melli, Turcato, Vangelli, Purificato. The Art Gallery was opened in 1984 by the municipal administration, in collaboration with the Regional Institute for Cultural Heritage. It is located in the former San Biago monastery, along with several of the city’s other cultural facilities. It was instituted in 1883 by Adriano Loli Piccolomini, who used several halls in the Malatesta Library to draw together all of the city’s cultural patrimony that had accumulated as a result of the Napoleonic suppression of Cesena’s places of worship. This collection was subsequently augmented thanks to donations from private collections and the Congregazione di Carità, a public welfare and charity institute. Towards the 1920s, the need for new storage space for the Malatesta library holdings led to parts of its collections being sent elsewhere. Numerous works of art were moved to city hall, and in the immediate post-WWII period the most valuable paintings were put on display in a room in the library itself. In its current location, the Art Gallery displays a significant proportion of its collection of over 300 paintings from the 15th to the 20th centuries. The Art Gallery has two main sections: one on ancient art, and another, newer section on modern and contemporary art. The exhibition begins with a series of 15th century fresco fragments of the Romagna school, originally located in several of the city’s places of worship, including the San Biagio monastery itself, and several paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries (among others, Madonna with Child and Saints, by the Argenta-born Antonio Aleotti, 1510; the so-called Casa Lancetti Christ, by the Cesena-born Scipione Sacco, 1545; and Portrait of Filasio Roverella, attributed to Baldassarre Carrari). Noteworthy items from the 17th and 18th centuries include some Madonnas by Giovan Battista Salvi, also known as Sassoferrato; works by Cignani, Todeschini, Batoni, and Piazzetta; and paintings by some of the most renowned local artists, including Serra, Razzani, and Milani. It should be noted that two of the Art Gallery’s most prestigious paintings (Francesco Francia’s The Presentation of Jesus at the Temple and Guercino’s Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata) are currently on display in the churches from whence they originally came: one in a side altar of the Basilica of Madonna del Monte, and the other in the Cappuccini chapel. The section on the 19th and 20th centuries mostly features works of local interest, as well as a large collection of Gino Barbieri’s graphic art. The section dedicated to contemporary art displays some items from the Morellini collection, including works by Cagli, Guttuso, Fazzini, Mazzacurati, Mirko, Melli, Turcato, Vangelli, and Purificato.
