Connected with the Department of Earth Science of the University of Bologna, the museum was inaugurated in 1881 during the 2nd International Geological Congress through the efforts of Giovanni Capellini (1833–1922), the founder and first president of the Italian Geological Society. In addition to approximately 3000 pieces collected by the scholar between 1860 and 1911, the museum also houses the historic collections of Marsili, Aldrovandi and Monti; the rich collection of Bolca fish fossils (1870); Europe’s largest collection of cycadeoids; two skeletons of the proboscidean Mastodon arvernensis, and the fossil of the edentate Scelidotherium capellinii. Lastly, there is the model – 26 metres long and 4 high – of the Jurassic dinosaur Diplodocus carnegiei. The Stanza Marsiliana has 16 pieces, 14 of which from elephant fossils, such as the Palaeoloxodon and the Mammuthus, described and represented by Marsili in his Danubius Pannonico Mysicus observationibus geograficus... perlustratus dated 1726. There is also a wooden fossil of Lithoxilon secundum ex Transilvania, cited in the “instrumentum donationis” of 1711, i.e. the printed catalogue of the first donation. Lastly, there is the singular mine model that Frederick Augustus, Elector of Saxony, donated to Marsili. The museum has preserved the chains that, for two years, bound Marsili’s ankles when he was imprisoned by the Turks, donated as a votive offering to the Virgin Annunciate in the chapel he founded. Legato al Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra dell'Università, è stato inaugurato nel 1881 in occasione del II Congresso Geologico Internazionale, per opera di Giovanni Capellini (1833-1922), primo presidente e fondatore della Società Geologica Italiana. Oltre ai circa trentamila pezzi raccolti dallo studioso stesso tra il 1860 e il 1911, il museo accoglie le collezioni storiche di Marsili, Aldrovandi e Monti; la ricca collezione di pesci fossili di Bolca (1870); la più grande collezione d'Europa di 'Cicadeoidee; i due scheletri del proboscidato 'Mastodon arvenensis', il fossile del maldentato 'Scelidoterium capellinii'. Ricordiamo infine il modello, lungo 26 metri e alto 4, del dinosauro del Giurassico 'Diplodocus carnegiei'. Nella stanza marsiliana sono presenti sedici pezzi, quattordici dei quali appartenenti ad elefanti fossili, come il 'Palaeoloxodon' e il 'Mammuthus', descritti e figurati dal Marsili nel suo "Danubius Pannonico Mysicus observationibus geograficus...perlustratus", del 1726. E' poi conservato un legno fossile di 'Lithoxilon secundum ex Transilvania', citato nell'"instrumentum donationis" del 1711, cioè il catalogo a stampa della prima donazione. Si segnala, infine, il singolare modello di miniera, dono di Federico Augusto Elettore di Sassonia a Marsili.Il museo conserva le catene che per due anni cinsero le caviglie del Marsili prigioniero dei turchi, donate quale ex voto alla Vergine Annunziata nella cappella dell'istituto da lui stesso fondato.
