Istituito nel 1999 da Comune, Provincia, Comunità Ebraica e dall'Istituto per i Beni Culturali, con lo scopo di conservare e valorizzare il patrimonio culturale ebraico a Bologna e in Emilia-Romagna, il museo ha sede in Palazzo Pannolini, storico edificio posto all'interno dell'ex ghetto. L'itinerario di visita è suddiviso in tre spazi: al piano terra si trovano la sezione espositiva permanente, e quella destinata ad attività temporanee; al primo piano è allestito il centro di documentazione del museo. L'assetto espositivo, corredato da strumenti multimediali e apparati illustrativi e didattici, affronta il tema dell'identità ebraica, spiegata per punti essenziali attraverso la storia e la cultura della comunità bolognese, i rapporti con l'università, le relazioni commerciali e con il credito convenzionale, gli usi, i costumi, le feste, i riti. Due sale sono dedicate alla permanenza degli ebrei a Bologna e nelle altre città emiliane e romagnole. Nel centro di documentazione sono consultabili le fonti bibliografiche e le "banche dati" collegate al museo e ai vari istituti della rete telematica. Fra le molteplici iniziative culturali del museo, si segnalano i corsi di lingua ebraica, antica e moderna.  The Museum was established in 1999 by the municipal and provincial administrations, the Jewish Community, and the Istituto per i Beni Culturali (Cultural Heritage Institute), with the goal of preserving and promoting Jewish cultural heritage in Bologna and Emilia-Romagna. The Museum is located in Palazzo Pannolini, a historic building in the former ghetto. The exhibits for visitors are divided into three sections: the ground floor includes the permanent exhibition and temporary exhibitions, while the first floor hosts the museum’s documentation centre. The displays, which take advantage of multimedia tools, illustrations, and teaching tools, focus on the issue of Jewish identity, whose basic aspects are explained through the history and culture of the Bologna Jewish community, its relationship with the university, trade and credit relations, customs, traditions, holidays, and rites. Two halls are dedicated to the presence of Jews in Bologna and other cities in Emilia-Romagna. The documentation centre includes the bibliographic sources and data bases used by the Museum and other institutions belonging to the ICT network; these can be freely consulted. Some of the Museum’s many cultural initiatives include language courses in ancient and modern Hebrew.
