Founded by the Benedictines and documented as early as 1201, although it may go back even earlier, it was established between the 16th and the 17th century in the buildings on the west side of the 10th century convent, rebuilt between 1498 and 1510 on the occasion of the reconstruction of the adjacent church of San Giovanni, redesigned by the architect Bernardino Zacchetti. In 1750 the Apothecary’s Shop was granted on licence to some apothecaries who used it until 1766; after various ups and downs, it was bought by the State in 1896 and opened to the public; it has been attached to the Parma National Gallery since 1951.
Fondata dai Benedettini e documentata al 1201, sebbene forse di epoca precedente, fu sistemata tra Cinque e Seicento nei locali sul lato ovest del convento risalente al X secolo ma riedificato tra il 1498 e il 1510 in occasione della ricostruzione della contigua chiesa di San Giovanni, riprogettata dall'architetto Bernardino Zacchetti. Nel 1750 la Spezieria venne data in concessione ad alcuni farmacisti, che la utilizzarono fino al 1766; dopo alterne vicende, fu acquistata dallo Stato nel 1896 e aperta al pubblico; dal 1951 dipende dalla Galleria Nazionale di Parma.
