The museum is located in the rural home leased to the Cervi family since 1934, where the seven sons of Alcide Cervi were executed by a firing squad comprised of militia members from the Salò Republic. After Liberation, the home almost immediately acquired great symbolic value for its role in the anti-fascist struggle and became a place of pilgrimage. Subsequent to numerous donations and the enlargement of the building, the home became a place to document and promote 20th century history, and in 1972 the Alcide Cervi Institute was established. In 1975 the building was purchased by the Province of Reggio Emilia, and after the completion of necessary consolidation work, the Cervi Museum was founded.
Il museo è allestito nella casa colonica abitata dalla famiglia Cervi dal 1934 e dove, nel 1943, furono fucilati dai militi della Repubblica di Salò i sette fratelli, figli di Alcide. Dopo la Liberazione la casa divenne fin da subito luogo di grande valore simbolico della lotta antifascista e per questo meta di pellegrinaggi della memoria. A seguito di numerose donazioni e dell’ampliamento dell’edificio, negli anni ’60 la casa diventa luogo di conservazione e valorizzazione della storia del Novecento, fino alla costituzione, nel 1972, dell’Istituto Alcide Cervi. Nel 1975 lo stabile viene acquistato dalla Provincia di Reggio Emilia e, dopo lavori di consolidamento della struttura, creato il Museo Cervi.
