The castle was rebuilt by Landi and in the 15th century it passed to the Condottiero Niccolò Piccinino before retuning once again to the Landi family. From the end of the 19th century it became the property of the Counts Zanardi Landi. Among the military action seen by the castle we recall the siege, held by the Spaniards in 1636, the sacking by German soldiers in 1746 and by the French in 1799. In this well restored castle, a fundamental example of medieval military architecture, and one of the most interesting and important in western Emilia, the different construction phases can be observed. The square keep, the pointed arch at the entrance of the town and the small semicircular tower inserted in the southward facing walls date back to the Middle Ages. In the second half of the 15th century the castle was restored by architect Solari, who also worked on the Kremlin Palace in Moscow, to make it more suited to the new military requirements, dictated by the use of firearms. The round tower, the extremely elegant courtyard with porticos and loggias, enhanced by terracotta friezes, capitals and medallions and the great hall belong to this period. The 18th century renovation works include the façade with its triangular tympanum, bearing the Latin inscription SVEVO SANGUINE LAETA, stressing the ancient blood ties between the House of Landi and the House of Swabia, and the great staircase that leads to the upper storey, where part of the rooms are used as a museum.
