The Museum of the Tricolore was inaugurated in 2004 in the rooms next to the historic Hall where - on 7 January 1797 - the famous tricolour flag was first conceived in Reggio Emilia. The elective headquarters of Reggio’s civic history - with its distinctive appearance, rendered unique by its elliptical stages - the building was the work of the architect, L. Bolognini, and was constructed between 1754 and 1774. Originally, it had been designed to house the municipal achieve, although this was later moved to Palazzo di S. Giorgio. Today, the Museum provides a record of some of the most important moments in the history of the country’s flag as well as of the Risorgimento movement in Italy using innovative histographic criteria. The Museum has been organised specifically to highlight the profound connection between the history of Italy's flag and the episodes that brought about its unification, in addition to the contributions that Reggio's inhabitants made to the battles for the country’s redemption. The first section of the Museum contains prints, paintings, arms, memorabilia, and drawings, as well as reconstructions of settings. It illustrates the political events that took place in Reggio Emilia, from the birth of the Repubblica Reggiana in 1796 to the start of the Restaurazione in 1814. The second section of the Museum contains original documents and mementos connected to historical events of the Risorgimento, up to at least 1897, when Reggio held its great celebration for the first Centenario del Tricolore (Centenary of the Italian flag), which culminated in a famous speech by Carducci. Modern audiovisual instruments are provided alongside historical documents to facilitate visits as well as highlight the meaning of the flag as a symbol of excellence for national identity.
