In 1928, for the first centenary of the death of the poet Vincenzo Monti (1754-1828) – one of the leading exponents of Italian neoclassicism – the 18th century building where he was born was used to house the first collection of the Museum Vincenzo Monti. The structure was fully refurbished and renovated in 1998, when it opened its doors to the public again. The poet’s home became the property of the municipality of Alfonsine in 1957, when it was donated by Cassiano Meruzzi. Today, the house still features part of its original decorations, such as its furniture, paintings, prints, and furnishings, as well as various personal objects that used to belong to the poet. A number of biographical artefacts can also be admired here, including a manuscript by Cardinal Gaisruk, editions of his first works, copies of the correspondence he exchanged with Monti, Manzoni, and Leopardi, and his diplomas and awards. Moreover, the Museum also contains a particularly fine bust of Monti - made by the Bologna-born artist, Cincinnato Baruzzi (1790-1878), one of Canova’s students - in addition to autographs signed by the poet and his daughter, Costanza. Furthermore, Casa Monti also contains the Visitor Information Centre of the Riserva Naturale Speciale di Alfonsine. Established to provide information on the natural environment of in the southern plains of Ravenna, with a special focus on local plants and wildlife, the centre promotes environmental education activities connected to the nature park and offers information on the Parco Delta del Po and its stations. In addition, the municipality is the owner of an ornithological exhibition containing over two hundred stuffed birds, providing a varied and rare overview of the species that inhabit the delta.
