The Cultural Centre is the result of a restoration and Museum promotion project spearheaded by the Massa Lombarda municipal administration. The Cultural Centre is located in the fully restored Art Nouveau-style building known as "Pueris Sacrum", and it hosts the Municipal Library, Municipal Art Gallery, and Venturini Civic Museum, all in one space. The Venturini collection marks an important episode in the history of Massa Lombarda, and is an emblematic example of a late-19th century antiques collection, as seen through the eyes of a unique figure, the Massa-born Carlo Venturini (1809-1886). Upon his death, his books and objects, along with the home where he kept his collections ordered according to subject matter, were devolved to the city. The Art Gallery includes the municipality’s painting collection as well as that of the local Health Authority (AUSL); it showcases some of the local artistic trends. Ancient materials – mostly pottery from Ancient Greece, Magna Graecia, and Etruria – make up the core of the Venturini collection. They include bucchero pottery, Corinthian and Etrusco-Corinthian vases, along with a small repertoire of pottery – including figures – from southern Italy. The most valuable piece is a red-figure hydria from the workshop of Assteas and Python (4th century B.C.). Black pottery, balsamariums from ancient Apulia, and lamps are also well represented; they were collected by Venturini in his attempt to exhaustively sample the Roman era. The bronze collection is also noteworthy: it includes brooches from the first and second Iron Age, ancient Roman domestic objects, small appliqués, and small votive statues. Thanks to its rarity and exotic allure, the material from North Africa is also noteworthy, especially the steles with Punic inscriptions from Carthage’s tophet, which were acquired by Venturini in his position as the Tunisian consul in Ancona. The decorative arts are represented by majolica pottery from Abruzzi and Faenza from the 17th and 18th centuries. The 18th century desco da parto (painted birth salver) from the Ferniani workshop is particularly noteworthy. The collection of Italian and European domestic objects is completed by tea and coffee sets, glasses, and some industrially-produced pieces. The numismatic collection includes an ancient section with over three hundred pieces from ancient Rome, while the modern section includes about one hundred 19th century pieces from Europe and Tunisia. Natural history specimens include fossils, seashells, and minerals displayed in the ancient museum’s original cases, re-creating the evocative atmosphere of the long-lost “museum-home”. The Art Gallery follows the evolution of the local arts scene starting in the 16th and 17th centuries, including some well-known artists such as Garofalo and Bastianino. It also hosts the Carlo Venturini (1809-1886)’s collection, made up mostly of 19th century paintings, the works of the Massa-born Giambattista Bassi (1784-1852), a few paintings by Angelo Torchi (1856-1915), who was also born in Massa, and some works having to do with agencies and religious institutions active in the Ravenna area. The exhibition ends with some works by Orfeo Orfei and by three members of the Folli family - Luigi, Guelfo, and Umberto.
