The museum is unique in its kind. The collections, which include work tools, equipment for distilling essences and materials related to the preparations and the study of their image, bear witness to the activity of the Borsari company from 1870, the year it was founded, to the mid 20th century. The collection traces the history of the company which took its name from its founder, Lodovico. Ever since the late 19th century, when perfume production was undertaken at industrial level (we recall “Parma Violet”, inspired by Marie Louise, Napoleon’s second wife), particular attention was devoted to the image of the products. This explains the variety of the lines and the shapes of the bottles, favoured by the fine local glass craftsmanship, the accurate graphics of the labels and the care taken with the advertising message, as may be seen both from large posters and from small scented calendars that were widely distributed at hairdresser’s salons or between the pages of fashionable magazines. On the whole, the collection presents an interesting chapter in the history of costume, graphics and advertising, up till the first half of the 20th century. The exhibition is complete with the original furnishings of the Borsari chemistry laboratory: the workbench, with the instruments and little bottles of basic essences for preparing perfumes, along with metal containers for storing the product.
