The Museum, unique in its kind, is located in the deconsecrated church of San Rocco. It documents the particular migratory phenomenon of the people from the Parma Apennines who, in search of a better life, specialised in public performances in the streets and fairs, playing music and presenting trained animals, including bears. Hence the name Orsanti, meaning bear trainers. Most of the street performers who felt the need to emigrate in the 19th century came from Valtaro and Valceno. Traces of their passing have been found not only in Italy but all over Europe. To survive they learned to capture and train animals such as monkeys, dogs, birds, bears and camels; they were acrobats and musicians, able to play several instruments at the same time; they were also itinerant sellers of a wide variety of goods. The Museum contains many testimonies of the life of the bear trainers: large bears in papier mâché, unusual musical instruments, stage costumes, period prints, paintings, documents and items of everyday life that tell the story of men who set off from Compiano, presumably as early as the 18th century, forced by necessity, to live an adventurous life as wanderers in distant countries.
