The museum was established in the 19th century and it is still of great importance for the Art Institute students. In 1838, the institution received a donation of 42 paintings from Dr. Cesare Martelli, among which there were works by Antonio Campi, Gian Mauro Della Rovere, called Fiamminghino, Miradori, Piola, Giovanni Andrea De Ferrari, Guidobono, Bonifacio dei Pitati, by artists of the Altdorfer school, by Mattia Preti, Giuseppe Maria Crespi, Della Vecchia, Benedetti Luti, Luigi Mussi and Carlo Maria Viganoni. The Martelli donation was followed by other batches of paintings that increased the museum’s collection, among these The Meeting of Hector and Andromache and Hector Rebukes Paris, two of the best juvenile works by Gaspare Landi as a “historical” painter, that were praised by Ippolito Pindemonte in a sonnet. Worthy of notice is also a board painting of the Circumcision by Perugino dated 1498, the painting by Morazzone representing the flogging of Jesus and an Education of the Virgin attributed to Roberto de Longe, as well as several paintings from the Zanco donation: the Madonna of Sorrows by Dolci, the Flowers Outdoors by Margherita Caffi and the Roman Landscape by J. P. Hackert. The Gazzola Museum also offers the visitor a vast selection of works representing the salient characteristics of Piacenza painting between the 19th and the 20th century. The Museum has granted the Civic Museums of Palazzo Farnese the temporary custody of the armoury, that came from the collection of Count Antonio Parma, of two paintings by Lorenzo Toncini and Bernardino Pollinari and a marble bust of Elisabetta Farnese.
