The collection of machines belonging to the Department of Pure and Applied Mathematics’ Laboratory, with a focus on mathematics and geometry, was put together for educational purposes, with the intention to translate abstract mathematical theorems, problems, demonstrations, and models into concrete and easily understandable terms. The machines were built based on ideas and descriptions drawn from the technical and scientific literature, with a timeframe ranging from Euclidean geometry to 19th century geometry, and spanning the relationship between mathematics and mechanics from the 16th century to the present day. Most machines are from the 16th to 19th centuries, and there are also “virtual” tools, simulations, and animation. Other models deal with problems that have long attracted the attention of scholars and artists, such as projections, perspective, and anamorphosis.
La collezione di macchine del Laboratorio del Dipartimento universitario di Matematica pura e applicata, incentrate sulla matematica e la geometria, si è formata principalmente con finalità didattiche, muovendo dall'intento di "provare" e "tradurre" in termini concreti e fisicamente percepibili teoremi, dimostrazioni, modelli e problemi matematici, la cui astrazione ne rende complessa la percezione e la comprensione. La costruzione degli strumenti ha preso spunto da suggerimenti e descrizioni della letteratura tecnico-scientifica di riferimento, con un arco temporale che va dalla geometria euclidea alla grande geometria ottocentesca, transitando per il rapporto fra matematica e meccanica instauratosi a partire dal Cinquecento in avanti sino al presente. La maggior parte delle macchine fa riferimento ai secoli XVI-XIX, ma non mancano strumenti "virtuali", simulazioni e animazioni. Altri modelli ancora trattano di problemi che hanno a lungo attirato l'attenzione di studiosi ed artisti come le proiezioni, la prospettiva, l'anamorfosi.
