The museum uses exhibits and eyewitness account to document the unique aspects of Montese’s material culture and history, from its origins to the Middle Ages to World War II and the creation of the Gothic Line. The museum features six thematic sections. The first, titled “settlement of the local territory”, uses maps to illustrate pre-history, the Etruscan and Roman eras, the presence of rural churches and oratories, and the local area’s natural features and human-built fortifications. The second is dedicated to material culture and the role of water in the economy, and describes bread-making and the harvesting and processing of chestnuts, as well as the results of a census of local mills. There is then a large historical section focusing on propaganda – during fascism, in the Social Republic, and in German, American, and Brazilian propaganda; on dictatorships and the crisis of democracy; on the period of transformation and on wartime Brazil. This part of the museum uses dioramas, documents, photographs, and war material to reconstruct the battles that took place along the Gothic Line. The liberation of Montese is illustrated by a relief map showing Brazilian positions along the Gothic Line from November 1944 to April 1945.
