The world’s largest collection of trading cards and related material from the early 19th century to the present became a museum in 1992, in keeping with the wishes of Giuseppe Panini, who founded the Panini trading company in 1961 and donated his entire collection to the municipality of Modena. The collection traces the history and development of these trading cards and related items, which were intended as advertising material and which were intensely sought out by collectors. The museum’s holdings comprise about 500,000 items, only a fraction of which are on display. These include great rarities, such as the Leibig series published between 1873 and 1975 by the German bouillon cube company of the same name. This series includes sketches, printer’s proofs, and lithography stones. There are thousands of trading cards from the Parisian department store "Au Bon Marché" and from other producers, 19th century cigarette cards from the USA, matchboxes, candy wrappers, barber shop calendars and other rarities which, taken together, make up an invaluable graphic arts and advertising historical archive.  Along with true trading cards, the museum’s collection also includes related material such as small antique prints, matchboxes, letter seals, bank notes, menus, small calendars, albums published by trading card companies or created by collectors themselves, and much more. The exhibits feature six display cases, conceived as albums to be leafed through, and each dedicated to a specific theme: "The precursors" (recurrent imagery from ancient prints to modern trading cards), "Chromolithography" (the invention of chromolithography and the printing process from preliminary sketches to finished trading cards), "Birth and diffusion" (from the birth of trading cards in France in the second half of the 19th century to the Italian prize competitions of the 1930s) "The Liebig collection" (the world’s most famous historic collection), "Not just trading cards" (cigarette cards, miniature calendars, letter seals, menus, place holders, hotel labels and other minor collections), "Modern trading cards" (post-WWII sports cards and albums). Alongside the permanent exhibition, a large glass display case hosts temporary exhibitions.
Accanto all'esposizione permanente, una grande vetrina ospita mostre temporanee.
