The Art Gallery was installed in 1839 inside Palazzo del Monte di Pietà. It drew together numerous works of art from various places of worship that were suppressed during the Napoleonic era. During subsequent decades, the initial core collection was augmented by other works purchased by the municipal administration from private subjects and public institutions. The exhibition space was enlarged in the 1940s; Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti updated the classification of the museum’s paintings on the basis of the tenets of art history at the time. During that time, the Museum also acquired some of the frescos from the Pannini home that were detached and transferred to canvas. These frescos were made by Guercino and his workshop between 1615 and 1617, and were donated by the Bolognese family Rosselli Del Turco, who had inherited them. The Museum’s current exhibits are arranged in chronological order. They feature the highest concentration of works from Guercino and his trainees and followers, most of whom were from Cento, and often related to the artist. Recent studies and research have made it possible to establish the actual authorship of each of these works, many of which were by the Gennari family: from Benedetto Gennari senior to Giovanni Battista Gennari, from Lorenzo, Bartolomeo, and Ercole to Cesare and Benedetto Gennari junior. Along with this extensive series of work, which sets Cento’s Art Gallery apart from other regional museums, the exhibition includes some works by Bolognese mannerist painters, such as Ludovico Carracci’s Madonna in a throne with saints and Ubaldo Gandolfi’s Annunciation. The Museum also has an important collection of prints, mostly from the 17th and 18th centuries and drawn from works by Guercino and his workshop. One hall is dedicated to the work of the Cento-born sculptor Stefano Galletti.

La pinacoteca si è costituita nel 1839 all'interno del Palazzo del Monte di Pietà. Qui furono riunite numerose opere d'arte provenienti da vari edifici di culto soppressi in età napoleonica. Nei decenni successivi, a quel primo nucleo si aggiunsero altre opere provenienti da acquisizioni effettuate dal Comune, da depositi di privati e da pubbliche istituzioni. Negli anni Quaranta furono ampliati gli spazi espositivi; Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti procedette a una schedatura finalizzata all'aggiornamento attributivo dei dipinti in base alle indicazioni della coeva storiografia artistica. Risale a quel periodo l'ingresso in museo di una parte degli affreschi staccati e trasportati su tela di casa Pannini, eseguiti dal Guercino e da aiuti della sua bottega fra il 1615 e il 1617, dono della famiglia bolognese Rosselli Del Turco che ne era entrata in possesso per vicende ereditarie. Il percorso espositivo attuale della pinacoteca si snoda secondo un criterio cronologico. Vi si registra la più alta concentrazione di opere del Guercino e dei suoi allievi e seguaci, prevalentemente centesi e in buona parte imparentati col pittore. Studi e ricerche recenti hanno consentito di stabilire le effettive paternità delle singole opere di marca guercinesca, come quelle riferite alla famiglia Gennari: da Benedetto Gennari seniore a Giovanni Battista Gennari, da Lorenzo, Bartolomeo, Ercole a Cesare e Benedetto Gennari iuniore. Accanto a questa nutrita serie di opere che caratterizzano la piancoteca centese rispetto ad altre realtà museali regionali, il percorso espositivo comprende alcuni dipinti di pittori manieristi bolognesi, 'la Madonna in trono e Santi' di Ludovico Carracci e 'l'Annunciazione' di Ubaldo Gandolfi. Un ulteriore patrimonio della pinacoteca è rappresentato dalla cospicua raccolta di stampe, prevalentemente sei-settecentesche tratte da opere del Guercino e della sua bottega. Da segnalare la sala dedicata all'opera scultorea del centese Stefano Galletti.
