Il museo è parte del Centro Imolese Documentazione Resistenza Antifascista e Storia Contemporanea (CIDRA) e nasce tra il 1983 e il 1985 su impulso delle associazioni resistenziali e del Comune di Imola. In sei sale espositive si approfondiscono alcune tematiche che aiutano il visitatore a ripercorrere le tappe della storia del territorio imolese tra le due guerre mondiali: Vent'anni di fascismo e antifascismo; Il difficile inizio partigiano; Resistenza in città e pianura; Guerriglia sull'Appennino; Le battaglie della 36° Brigata; Liberazione, Ricostruzione, Repubblica, Costituzione. Il percorso è corredato da pannelli e bacheche che conservano fotografie, manifesti, volantini, giornali, documenti di vario genere, cimeli, carte topografiche, plastici e ordigni bellici. Da segnalare anche una raccolta filatelico-numismatica e le lettere degli internati militari e dei deportati.
Il CIDRA possiede anche un ricchissimo archivio storico, che conserva oltre 45.000 carte oltre ad un importante fondo fotografico e audiovisivo, e una biblioteca, che offre settemila tra volumi e opuscoli e una consistente emeroteca.
The museum is part of the Centro Imolese Documentazione Resistenza Antifascista e Storia Contemporanea (CIDRA) and was founded by the Resistance associations and the Municipality of Imola. Six rooms illustrate several themes that help visitors trace the steps in the history of the Imola area during the interwar years: twenty years of fascism and antifascism, the difficult beginnings of the partisan movement, the resistance in the town and on the plain, guerrilla warfare in the Apennines, the battles of the 36th Brigade, liberation, reconstruction, the Republic and the constitution. The itinerary is accompanied by panels and display cases holding photographs, posters, pamphlets, newspapers, documents of various kinds, mementos, maps, models and bombs. There is also a stamp and coin collection and letters from military prisoners and deportees.
CIDRA also has an extensive historical archive containing over 45,000 written documents, as well as a large photographic and audiovisual collection, and a library with 7000 volumes and booklets, and a sizable newspaper archive.
